The first attempt to create a museum in Bukovina was made in 1863 by fans of antiquity. However, the lack of financial support and other circumstances led to the suspension of its activities. 1877 museum collections were transferred to the Chernivtsi University. Only May 14, 1893 the outstanding efforts of researcher-ethnographer Professor KA Romshtorfera was inaugurated Regional Museum, which operated without a break before the First World War.

Expanding trade relations with other provinces of Bucovina Austro-Hungarian and foreign partners led to the creation under the auspices of the Chamber of Trade Crafts and Crafts Museum (later the Industrial Museum) in May 1887. It actively promoted Regional President Von FF Pino and mayor of Chernivtsi A. Kochanowski.

 

 

Since June 1899 in Chernivtsi acted museum of religious art, and later – Bukovinskoy Metropolis Museum, created thanks to the efforts of Professor Y. Kozak.

1935 Regional Museum (1930 – Regional) was merged with Industrial Museum called King Carol II.
1940 on the basis of these museums were established Chernivtsi Regional Museum, which opened the exhibition in the former residence of Bukovina metropolitans. Since 1956, the museum operates on the premises on the street. Kobylanska 28.

 

Nowadays Chernivtsi Museum – is nearly 90 thousand exhibits (collection of old books with unique Ostroh Bible, printed in 1581 Ivan Fedorov, numismatic collection, which includes more than 3,000 coins, an interesting collection of weapons, archaeological collection includes over 12,000 exhibits ; and others). The pride of the museum is a collection of fine and decorative art, which is based icons XVI-XVIII centuries. Bukovynian of prominent artists Ivasyuka M., J. Pihulyak, E. Maksimovic, A. Kochanowski. Natural collection of nearly 10,000 natural samples (stuffed, wet preparations Herbarium entomological collection etc.). In it, in particular, are species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, the European Red List and the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, as well as endemic and relic.

The museum offers visitors a view fragments newly exposure, permanent exhibition, tour and lecture service, view films and exhibits traveling exhibitions in institutions and organizations, helping to create institutional, public and private museums, conducts research (2002 resumed publication of scientific Yearbook).
